(Westminster Promenade to Colorado Blvd) Map... Rating: Nice Ride Short Description: Pretty good set of bikeways/sidewalks along 104th from Westminster all the way to Colorado Blvd. The path is on the North Side and that is usually the best side to ride on. If you are going East, switch to the south side as you go over I25. Detailed Description: The bikeway is usually a ten feet wide strip of concrete running along the north side of 104th. At a few points it narrows, but it is always there. (A sidewalk on the south side comes and goes.) From Westminster Promenade heading east, the trail climbs a fairly long hill. At the top of the hill, the trail follows along the bag of houses until it gets near I25. About a mile from I25, businesses and stores start to front the bikeway. If you are heading east, you should switch to the south side so you will be in the proper lane of traffic. The drivers pulling out of the shops will not see you and the south trail does a good job of getting you over I25. Once past Grant Street, the trail again is best on the North side and runs along the back of houses. The few cross-streets have lights but still be careful as you will be going the wrong direction for cars turning right to see you. If you stay on the south side, you will have numerous parking lots for the shopping centers to negotiate. There is no usable shoulder so riding in traffic would require keeping up with the 45mph speed limit. Right around I25 you could probably do it with the lights slowing things down. Past Grant, the speeds pick up and the lights are usually green for 104th traffic. Overall, it is a reasonable choice for east-west travel up north. |
