Do all the parts of the network work? The paramount importance of a network is it's Availability. If the network or its components do not function correctly, the system becomes useless. "Downtime" performance measurements seek to quantify this area. Often overlooked are the nodes of the network. If an e-mail server is "up" but a workstation is down, the network is down from the perspective of the user. Similarly, if a printer is down and a user needs to print an e-mail, the "system" is not available. Measurements of availability must account for the entire network. Numerous tools exist to monitor and manage network availability. Properly configuring those tools requires a detailed knowledge of both networking in general, and the particular network being managed.
