Server-centric computer networks have been forced upon organizations in the past decade.  Many networks have evolved from a couple of computers required for specific purposes to numerous computers and a sophisticated infrastructure supporting all aspects of the organization.  Organizations depend on systems which have never been subject to formal management.

Managing a network requires a model.  The model must accomplish three goals: 1) guide the technicians, 2) give managers something to measure technicians with, and 3) give users a definition of what the network is expected to provide.  The OSI has created a Network Management Model for this purpose.  I have adapted it a bit for my use.  Click on the following link to view the OSI model and mine along with an explanation of the differences between the two.

The seven elements of my network management model are listed in the menu on the left of this page.  Click on any of the links for details on the particular element.
