Can only the appropriate people use the network resources? Security is today's hot topic in network management. Next to availability, it is probably the most important aspect of network management. It is also the most time consuming, and easiest to slip on. Securing a network first requires an in-depth look at all aspects of the network that can create a risk. Those risks then need to be analyzed so proper responses can be put in place to minimize each risk. Then the hard part comes - maintaining the procedures and policies that were put in place to minimize the risk. Software developers build a number of tools into their network operating systems that make it easy to maintain policies and procedures once they are developed. Unfortunately, as the number of tools increases and their complexity increases, the proper application of those tools becomes more complicated. The cumulative effect of applying multiple policies requires experience to understand.
